DETECTIVE HARRY FOX

Crazy Like a Fox

Have you heard this dialogue before?

    Harrison: Hello?

Harry: Harrison, I need your help.

Harrison: Dad, you keep forgetting. I'm a lawyer. You're the detective!

Harry: Aw, come on, son. All I need is a ride. What could possibly happen?

This dialogue started each episode of the American detective series Crazy Like a Fox, aired between 1984 and 1986 in the USA for 35 episodes. 33 of these were also broadcast in Germany.

Private detective Harry Fox  (portrayed by Jack Warden) works in San Francisco. The comedic nature of the detective series is emphasized by the interaction between Harry Fox and his son, Harrison Fox Jr. (portrayed by John Rubinstein), who works as a lawyer in San Francisco.

Harry Fox Jr., a somewhat conservative lawyer, is married to Cindy (portrayed by Penny Peyser) and the couple also has a son named Josh (portrayed by Robert Kiger).

His life would be so easy if his father didn’t ask for his help every now and then and insisted that he truly needed it. Excuses and pretexts are not permitted by the detective, which is how the lawyer is often dragged into a series of unusual situations.

Since private detective Harry Fox does not exclusively rely on phone calls to get his message across but turns up at the most inappropriate times at his son’s law firm, even his secretary, Allison Ling (portrayed by Lydia Lei) got used to the visits of his boss’ father. Harry Fox Jr. had a new secretary during the second season of the series, who was portrayed by Patricia Ayame Thomson.

Although Harry Fox Jr. is always strongly opposed to helping his father solve a case, he still ends up doing so. In the course of the series, he becomes accustomed to his father’s pleas, which result in him being pulled away from his introspective firm and all of a sudden taking part, alongside his father, in chases or shootings.

As part of their detective work, it often happens that Harry Sr. and Harry Jr. must provide their help to the police, represented here by Lieutenant Walker (portrayed by Robert Hanley). It is, however, considerably more frequent that they get in Walker’s way during his investigations.

Unfortunately, the great success of this well done series ran out, thus, it was discontinued after 35 episodes.
