The series Dick and the Duchess was filmed in London, UK, and was centred around an American insurance investigator named Dick Starrett, played by Patrick O'Neal, who has his office in London.

Dick was married to the attractive Jane, played by Hazel Court. Dick always called his wife "Duchess". Jane was always somehow involved in the insurance cases of her husband. Jane's parents had trouble accepting her their son-in-law because he was an American and a commoner.

In three of the 26 episodes, Richard Wattis played the role of Peter Jamison, a friend and partner of Dick. Inspector Stark from Scotland Yard was often assisting him in investigating these cases. The character was portrayed by Michael Stepley. In the office, Dick was also helped by Rodney, played by Ronnie Stevens.
