Dr. Quincy

Since the death of his wife, Helen, caused by cancer, Quincy has been living on his sailboat moored in the Marina Del Rey near Santa Monica. His first name is never revealed. What is certain is that his first name starts with an R, because this letter is shown in his passport, as well as on a business card and his office door.

Due to his appearance, his charm and his humour, Quincy is popular among women, but he has neither a partner, nor a girlfriend. After Dr. Quincy (played by Jack Klugman) has given up his private practice to work as a forensic pathologist in the medical examiner buildung of Los Angeles in the series Quincy M.E., he stated again and again that the alleged fatal accident is either a suicide or a homicide.

Although not his task, Quincy was busy investigating these crimes and helping in the capture of the perpetrators. His investigation, which he pursues similarly to a private investigator, are often in conflict both with his supervisor, Dr. Robert Asten, as well as police Lieutenant Monahan, who is also his friend.

Dr. Asten, who wants to see a case closed as quickly as possible, is of course not thrilled when Quincy pursues his investigations and, in his eyes, wastes time. Lieutenant Monahan, however, is not enthusiastic about the fact that Quincy constantly exceeds his authority. Sam Fujiyama, who assists Dr. Quincy at every autopsy, has his hands full many times, leading to their common boss Dr. Asten being on the wrong track when Quincy pursues his investigation into a case.

In the first seasons of the show, Dr. Quincy investigated mostly criminal matters when, as already described, his investigation revealed a seemingly natural death to be a homicide. So, for example, he points out that the victim was murdered by poison, which of course is not evident at an initial consultation. Quincy led the case in a whole new direction due to his investigation, however, the perpetrator was never captured.

In the later seasons, topics of general interest and problems of a social nature are also added to the content. Take the case of the death of a motorcyclist was driving without a helmet, for example. Here, the upcoming introduction of the helmet law for motorcyclists is considered an issue. The neglect of elderly and / or dependent people was also the issue in a case, as was child abuse. No matter what it was - Dr. Quincy researched until the case was resolved.

In the first two seasons, Quincy had a friend named Lee Potter. After leaving the series, Quincy had a girlfriend again, but these relationships were never long. In many cases, Quincy was advised by the psychologist Dr. Emily Hanover (played by Anita Gillette). Over time it developed into a friendship and gradually into a relationship. Eventually they married and Emily now bears the name Dr. Hanover-Quincy.
