Jennifer Jareau, nicknamed JJ, grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she also attended the East Allegheny High School. During her school years, she was captain of the football team. Her sister committed suicide when Jennifer was 11 years old. The death of her sister hit Jennifer very hit and she often thinks of her today. Without knowing exactly why, JJ fears woods and finds it very difficult to be in a forest even later on.

After finishing school, David Rossi was on a book tour for his new book in Pittsburgh and held a reading in which Jennifer Jareau took part. During this reading developed her desire to work for the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation). Upon completion of the FBI Academy in Quantico, she came on the show Criminal Minds in the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), where among other things, she manages the public relations of the unit. So you could say that JJ is the face of the BAU in the media.

Other responsibilities of Supervisory Special Agent Jennifer Jareau (played by AJ Cook), is to select the cases in which the BAU will engage. Because there are many inquiries from around the country, she is there to weigh exactly where the unit is needed most. In addition, she coordinates the work of the team with the local police - a task with which she copes with competence and efficiency.

In the case of the serial killer Tobias Hankel, she performs investigations with Dr. Spencer Reid on a lonely farm. In separating on the premises, JJ is attacked by the dogs in the big barn, and Dr. Reid is kidnapped and held prisoner by Hankel. Even if JJ could shoot the dogs attacking her, she afraid of these animals.

During a subsequent investigation in New Orleans, she meets Detective William LaMontagne. First, the two meet secretly, because JJ would like to keep this part of their lives for themselves. She also works with a team of the best profilers in the world, which makes them a little afraid of the comments of their colleagues.

Of course, their colleagues already know what is going on, but they are waiting for JJ to admit her relationship with the detective. Even if the great distance between Quantico and New Orleans is causing them both worries, they become a couple.

When JJ gets pregnant, William proposes to her and gives up his job at the New Orleans Police Department to be with her. Even during her pregnancy, JJ goes to work for the BAU as normal, even ignoring the fact that she obviously can’t handle physically demanding tasks any more. Some time prior to the delivery, she appoints Agent Jordan Todd to fulfil her duties, tasks which are prolonged for during her maternity leave.

When her son Henry is born, the two agree that Penelope Garcia and Spencer Reid should be the godparents of their son, and when asked, the two accept gladly.
